History of the Colorado Rockies

The very first wheelchair softball team in Colorado, the Colorado Rockies Wheelchair Softball team, was a product of a sponsorship outline between the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball Club’s Community Outreach department and the Mountain States Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (MSCPVA). The deal allowed MSCPVA to use the Rockies name and logo for it’s affiliated Rockies Wheelchair Softball team as well as provide funding resources for the program. In return, the Rockies Wheelchair program provided opportunities for wheelchair users to participate in America’s Greatest Pastime on an equal yet competitive playing field.

Today, most of wheelchair softball in Colorado including the Rockies Wheelchair Team is coordinated by a joint effort between the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club, National Wheelchair Softball Association (NWSA), Colorado Wheelchair Softball and Colorado Wheelchair Sports Association (CWSA).

KEY FACTS

Since 1996, the Rolling Rockies have introduced wheelchair softball to over 500 adults and children with disabilities in Colorado.

In 1996, the Rolling Rockies first year, they shocked the nation taking 8th place at the national tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1997, the popularity of softball in Denver grew and the Rolling Rockies split into two separate teams: the Rockies Grey and Rockies White teams. The Rockies Grey team retained most of the original players from the first year while the Rockies White team was comprised of mostly novice first-time players. These novice players took third place in Division II at the national tournament in Pasadena, Texas that same year. The third place trophy was the first wheelchair softball trophy displayed at Coors Field.

In 1997, the Rolling Rockies introduced wheelchair softball to 125 children at the Colorado Junior Wheelchair Camp. It was such a hit that it quickly became a major event in the Camp each year.

In 1998, the Rockies White team separated from the Rolling Rockies program and became two separate teams known as the Blake Street Bombers and Boulder Brewers.

The Rockies (Grey) finished five national tournaments at 8th place, taking the Division II title three years in a row from 1999-2001.

In the Rolling Rockies seven-year history, they have won over 50 all-tournament selections and Division II titles combined.

2008 Season

Practice will resume starting in April of 2008 at Shafer Park in Lakewood (southeast of Kipling and Hampden Frontage Rd)
