Fields
Wheelchair softball is played on any hard surface such as an abandoned parking lot. In fact, almost half of the wheelchair softball fields around the country are on a parking lot of some kind. There are however several state-of-the-art fields designed specifically and only for the use of wheelchair softball.
Pasadena, Texas was the first city to build a complex specifically designed for wheelchair softball. The two-field complex has complete facilities, a painted field to resemble grass, bleachers and an electronic scoreboard. Other cities such as Columbus, Ohio, St. Louis, Missouri Brockton, Massachusetts, and Baltimore, Maryland also have fields that are solely designed for wheelchair softball. Other fields such as Bulova Park in Queens, New York and Sky View in Colorado Springs, Colorado are multi-purpose fields for various sports but contain permanent fencing.
Whether you decide to lay out a permanent or temporary field, please note that the surface needs to be void of any obstructions in a 200' radius to enable an official field to be painted or chalked. Most parking lots contain light fixtures or curbs which may obstruct the field of play. Keep in mind safety concerns when deciding a location.
